Sandusky Register - Local officials line up to endorse Husted for governor

SANDUSKY — When you're running for governor, it's good to have friends.

Secretary of State Jon Husted, a Republican running for governor, seems to have many supporters in Erie and Ottawa counties.

On Thursday, state Sen. Randy Gardner, R-Bowling Green, and state Rep. Steve Arndt, R-Port Clinton, officially endorsed Husted.

Other officials who climbed on Husted's bandwagon when the candidate came to Sandusky and Port Clinton Thursday were Erie County Auditor Rick Jeffrey, Erie County Commissioner Matt Old, Port Clinton Mayor Hugh Wheeler, former Port Clinton Mayor Debbie Hymore-Tester, Ottawa County commissioners Mark Coppeler and Mark Stahl, former state Sen. Mark Wagoner of Toledo and Carolyn Adams, chairman of the Ottawa County Republican Party.

Other Republicans in the race are Attorney General Mike DeWine, Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor and U.S. Rep. Jim Renacci.

Gardner said he likes all of the candidates.

"We have a strong Republican field for governor," he said.

But Gardner said he was impressed with Husted when the candidate was the speaker of the Ohio House. Husted also has a strong interest in Lake Erie and a strong commitment to supporting the lake, Gardner said.

Arndt said he's been a Husted fan for years.

"Jon is just one of those individuals who is very committed to family and community," Arndt said.

Husted said he’s pleased to get so much local support.

“It sends a strong message to the people of this community — the people that they trust, trust me,” he said.
